Characteristics of BARI Mango-11:
- BARI Mango-11 is a barmasi (year-round) variety of mango, i.e. it bears fruit throughout the year.
- It bears fruit three times a year. The tree flowers in November, February and May, and the fruit becomes ready to harvest in March-April, May-June and July-August.
- The fruit is elongated (11.3 cm long) and the average weight of each mango is 300-350 g.
- The skin of the raw mango is light green. When ripe, the skin turns yellowish green.
- The mango tree is 6-7 feet tall. Some parts of the tree have flowers, some parts have fruitlets, some have raw mangoes, and elsewhere there are ripe mangoes. The whole ‘life cycle’ of the mango is on display on a single tree.
- It is tasty to eat, but has a little fibre. The flesh of the fruit is deep yellow.
- From a 4-5-year-old tree of this variety, 60-70 mangoes can be harvested each time. Also, a single tree of this variety yields up to about 50 kg of mangoes per year.
- A one-year-old BARI Mango-11 tree produces mango flowers.
- Each bunch on the tree has 5-6 mangoes.
- This high-yielding mango variety is suitable for cultivation in all areas of Bangladesh.
- This mango variety is entirely a native mango, not a hybrid. It arose through natural cross-breeding.
Suitable land for cultivation: Medium-high land and loamy soil are suitable for cultivating BARI Mango-11.
Propagation: It can be propagated by seed or grafting. Seedlings grown from seed do not give fruit like the mother tree. So it is best to produce and propagate saplings of this variety through grafting. The best time for this is Jyoishtho-Asharh / Bhadro-Ashwin (May-June / August-September).
Mango ripening time: As May is the mango season, the yield is higher in this month. Mangoes ripen in a second phase in August, a third in November and a fourth in February.
Yield: The yield of BARI Mango-11 is 22,000 kg/hectare, or 22 tonnes/hectare. In addition, a yield of 80-90 kg of mangoes per decimal is obtained.
Where available: BARI Mango-11, the barmasi (year-round) mango, is now cultivated at all horticulture research centres in Bangladesh. Scientific officers at all regional horticulture centres of the country are working to spread this variety to every corner of the country.
Prospects: Since flowers, fruit and ripe mangoes are available throughout the year from BARI Mango-11, cultivation of this variety will increase in the future. BARI Mango-11 can also be grown on rooftops.
