Details
'Palmer mango is a large, commercially grown late-season mango variety that originated in southern Florida. When fully ripe the mango turns yellow with a reddish blush. The fruit is most popular for its exotic tropical aroma and minimal fibre, and it is considered one of the most delicious fruits in the world. The ‘Palmer’ mango is a large, commercially grown late-season mango variety that originated in southern Florida.
History
The original tree grew from a seed planted around 1925 on the property of Mrs Victor Mele in Miami, Florida. For the next several decades Palmer's parentage was unknown, but a 2005 pedigree analysis suggested that Palmer was a seedling of Haden. The variety was first propagated in 1945 and formally named in 1949. It gained some commercial acceptance in Florida and is still grown on a limited commercial basis in the state, as well as in regions outside the United States such as Africa [2] and Australia
Palmer trees are planted in the USDA's germplasm collection in Miami, [4] at the University of Florida's Tropical Research and Education Center in Homestead, Florida, and at the Miami-Dade Fruit and Spice Park,[6] as well as in home gardens.
Description
The fruit is large; especially large specimens weigh up to several pounds. On ripening, the colour turns yellow with a red blush; the fruit turns purple long before maturity, and sometimes immature fruit is picked. The flesh is orange-yellow with a mild and aromatic flavour, with minimal fibre, and it contains a monoembryonic seed. It ripens in Florida from July to early September, making it a late-season cultivar.
The tree is a moderately vigorous grower and has an upright canopy. Palmer
