King of Chakapat Mango
Planting method: Plant the tree in a place where water does not stand in the rainy season, floodwater does not stagnate, and which gets sufficient sunlight all day. The tree does well if the land is high and the soil is fertile loam, sandy loam or silt loam. It does even better if the soil is rich in organic matter. In organic soil the tree is healthy and fruitful, and grows quickly.
The land must be levelled and cleared of weeds by ploughing several times and harrowing. The planting distance depends on the mango variety. For fast-growing varieties or large trees, plant generally at a distance of 12 metres, or about 40 feet. Planting at this distance, about 9 trees can be planted in one bigha of land. For medium-sized trees, plant at a distance of 10 metres or 35 feet, and following this distance 13 trees can be planted in one bigha. For short varieties such as BARI Mango-3 (Amrapali), they can be planted at 6-8 metres, and following this distance about 20-27 trees can be planted in one bigha. Depending on the variety, the planting distance for mango trees ranges from 6×6 metres and 10×10 metres up to 12×12 metres. Whether saplings are planted in a square, rectangular, triangular or hexagonal system, the planting spots must be marked and pits dug there before the rains begin. Generally in May-June, pits of 75-100 centimetres in length, width and depth must be dug. While digging, keep the soil from the upper half of the pit on one side and the soil from the lower part on the other side. After the soil is taken out of the pit, the pit must be left to dry in the sun for 10 days. Then, per pit, 10 kg of cow dung manure, 500 g TSP, 250 g MP, 250 g gypsum, 50 g zinc sulphate and 10 g boric acid must be mixed with the topsoil, the soil turned over, and the pit filled. When filling the pit, if it cannot be filled with the soil from the upper half, topsoil from the side should be added to the pit as needed. But the pit must not be filled with the soil from the lower part of the pit.
